*Ruby is the birthstone for July and the gem for the 15th and 40th anniversaries.

Ruby is one of the most historically significant colored stones. They are mentioned four times in the Bible, in association with attributes like beauty and wisdom. In the ancient language of Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones.”

In its purest form, the mineral corundum is colorless. Trace elements that become part of the mineral’s crystal structure cause variations in its color. Chromium is the trace element that causes ruby’s red, which can range from an orangy red to a purplish and pinkish red.

*Spinel offers a range of hues, from orange to intense “stoplight” red, vibrant pink, and all shades of purple, blue, and violet through bluish green to black.

Spinel was recently added as an August birthstone, sharing this month with peridot and sardonyx.

Well-formed spinel crystals are fairly common in nature. Spinel crystals are so perfect, in Burma they are said to be nat thwe or “polished by the spirits.” Spinel can be found in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar(Burma), and Afghanistan. These Black Spinel gems were mined in Thailand.

*Tourmaline is a birthstone for October, along with opal. Tourmaline is also the gem of the eighth wedding anniversary.

They come in a wide variety of exciting colors. In fact, tourmaline has one of the widest color ranges of any gem species, occurring in various shades of virtually every hue.

These Black Tourmalines were mined in Madagascar.

*Scapolite is a rare gemstone that is named after the Greek word, "skapos" meaning stick or stem, due to the long columnar formation of its crystals.

The most common color of scapolite is honey yellow, but it can also be violet, orange, pink, brown, gray or colorless. Its brilliance and vitreous luster make it a desirable gemstone and collector's item.

Fine gemstone quality scapolite is extremely rare and is sought after by gem and mineral collectors. These Scapolite gems were mined in Madagascar.

*These earrings come expertly packaged in a beautiful blue gift box and finished with a satin ribbon. Also in the box: a Sunshine Soft polishing cloth and an anti-tarnish pad to keep your jewelry shiny and clean.
