*As the gem of spring, emerald is the perfect choice as the birthstone for the month of May. It’s also the gem of the twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.
In honor of the 20th wedding anniversary, I’ve placed 20 Emerald rondelles on each earring. This is to commemorate the first 20 years of marriage and to look forward to the next 20 years.
Emerald is the green to greenish blue variety of beryl, a mineral species that also includes aquamarine as well as beryls in other colors.
Emeralds are mined in many locations around the world but the most notable emeralds are found in Columbia, Brazil and Zambia. These particular emeralds were mined in Zambia. Zambian emeralds have a slightly blueish green color which resembles emeralds from Columbia.
*Aquamarine is the birthstone for those born in March and is the gemstone of the 19th wedding anniversary.
The name "aquamarine" is derived from two Latin words: aqua, meaning "water" and marina, meaning "of the sea".
Aquamarine, like Emerald, is part of the Beryl family of gemstones.
Fashioned aquamarines often have to be fairly large-generally over 5 cts- to show intense, dark color.
Brazil has been the world's most important source of gem-quality aquamarine since 1811. In 1910, the largest aquamarine on record was found in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It weighed 244 lbs and measured 19 inches long and 15 inches in diameter.
These Aquamarines were mined in Zambia.
